École Belle-Baie

Opened in 2023, École Belle-Baie is the first French Language school to open in Torbé, instructing students from pre-primary to grade nine.

In March 2023, our school was officially named after a public contest to suggest names was launched. A short-list was created by a committee composed of members of the community and the school that saw five names submitted to the elected board of the CSAP who chose École Belle-Baie, suggested by Melissa Boudreau, a teacher from Antigonish. On December 9, 2024, we moved into our beautiful modular school, featuring five large classrooms, a long, wide hallway with vaulted ceilings that provide ample meeting space, a large playground, and a brand-new interior. We are now ready to welcome more students and provide them with a rich and dynamic learning experience.

Parc de Nos Ancêtres, la Rivière

The concept of our Acadian commemorative park was to relate our story uniquely using local resources. Therefore, we chose ten large stones on which to paint different stages of our history. Two artists from our Torbé region, Moni Duersch and Charlotte Petitpas created a series of ten paintings that walk our visitors through our history from our departure from France to the arrival of our ancestors in the Torbé region in 1797. The park is designed in the shape of an anchor which is very symbolic to our history. A bilingual interpretive plaque explains each painting.

Place Savalette, Port Félix

A National Historic Site that relates a lost chapter of our Canadian mosaic. This large monument in the shape of a boat was created in 2019 to tell the rich story which connects to the Basque and their captain, Savalette. They arrived among the many small islands to establish a dry cod fishery on these shores in 1565. In 1607, likely the first international meeting on Canadian soil occurred here involving the Mi’kmaq, the Basque and the French representative Samuel de Champlain. The Basque and the Mi’kmaq shared their knowledge and products for forty-two years. The Acadians arrived here in 1797. This rich story is told through artist Moni Duersch’s professionally painted scenes and bilingual interpretive panels.
